at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
Just had a bit of a disagreement with the other half .

Her kids school is 150 meters from her house and she pays a child minder to walk her there

The kid is 8 years old and the school is in the highams park bit of E17

I'm sure I walked to school younger than 8

Thoughts?

Kids should be able to hotwire a car and drive themselves to school by the age of 10

Can't imagine why it didn't work out, Yarmouth. You sound like such a smooth, romantic gent.

My boys were about 9 and 7 when they went on their own. Of course being 2 off them helps and South Ken is hardly the den of crime. Paul Mc Cartney's house was opposite. After saying that paedos are everwhere. No way I'd let them go on their own at that age.

Rowan Atkinson's daughter and the Crown Prince of Norways son whent here as well.

And no it wasn't private.

cup of tea -

Know what you mean - we were walking to school kicking a ball about around 9 I think.

Started fingering the girl who turned out to be the love of my life round the back of the electric shed on the way home around 14.

We never got together in the end, had a chance again about 10yrs ago but I fucked things up badly as usual.

Sad really..

Oh bollocks - COYFI's

We did as kids probably about 8. We loved it as most of the way was by the Thames.

Used to drive mum nuts when the weather got warmer as we used to go down on the foreshore, smashing bottles trying to get in boats and generally getting covered in shit.

Fast forward to now I love taking my son to school, always havea great chats about footy.

Plus nice to oggle at the yummy mums.

Will come a day when he will to go wiht his mates though.

it was 1967, I was 6 and walked in with my mate of same age, about half a mile.
times were different then & I think my Mum couldn't believe she let me looking back. led to my first brush with the law, smashed all the windows out of a crane with a spanner on a builders yard. no caution, below the age of criminal responsibility. thrashed by the old man though,

Re: at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
It depends on the parent.

I would say 9-10

Do the parents feel comfortable because some obviously do not, just like your missus and I do not see her as putting a foot wrong .

All parents live with a touch of worry and it does not stop at childhood, that is basically being a parent.

Do not get me wrong joe Royal you are not in the wrong to think it silly but you are obviouslt a tad stronger in the heart.

150 meters and she won't let an 8 year old walk it? Is the child a spastic? Because if not she's going to make it one.

This sort of shit is why women shouldn't be left to raise kids on their own. They create poofs.

As far as I'm aware, it is statistically no more dangerous out there than it was 20/30 years ago, just that everyone believes that it is due to the endless non-stop media coverage of everything bad that happens.

Bad news didn't seem so bad when it was only on telly for 25 mins 2 or 3 times a day rather than being thrust at you 24/7 from every device you own. Really affects your perception of it.

On a related note, a friend of mine's brother lives in Japan and has a young son that goes to school there. Apparently it is completely normal for kids there as young as 5 or 6 to walk to the station, catch a train and get themselves to school on their own.

Different norms.

No particular age.it needs to be a part of a development and learning program . and not primarily for any particular convenience.

Unless you are literally in sight of the school then id say that its the transition to Comprehensive School that marks the time they find their own way - or at least to the bus stop to catch the school bus.

Why risk it over a bit of cash..

Your kid gets to school safe, be happy with that rather than rolling the dice.

We didnt let our kids go to school on their own til they went to Comp.

Re: at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
My little girl is five soon and to me she is still my little baby. I can't see that changing when she's 8. I would be fucking petrified to see her walk off on her own even though her school is only 500-600 metres away. Still, can't hold them forever. I do think 8 is a little young but, then again, what's the difference between 8, 9 or 10. Might aswell let them go.

"not so many paedos or Muslim rapists about then...."

Operation Yewtree proving that first bit to be complete rubbish.

Just more people used to get away with it in those days.

Re: at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
I started walking to school on my own as soon as I reched secondary school so around 11. School was 20 minutes walk away but then again not so many paedos or Muslim rapists about then so much safer.

By the time I was 13 I was fingering Jenny Marshall down an alley I had to walk through before getting to school

8 is far to young

its not what it use to be when we were kids

its not just the kidnappers these days, so many more threats

Re: at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
It was only acceptible for me to walk to school on my own aged 11, so basically when I went to senior school.

That's senior school 1st year to you youngens and none of that year 8 bollocks or whatever it is now.

And I lived in Emerson Park in a time when the world wasn't as fucked up as it is today, but my parents wouldn't let me go further than 20 metres from the house unsupervised until that age.

If you live in a city things may have changed a lot, but out in the sticks it's the same as it ever was apart from the heavy traffic on main roads. Children still buy sweets at the local shop, make dens, play football up the rec, climb trees, go on bike rides etc...

Stop reading the tabloids and fucking about on social media for a few months and you'd be amazed how much better things look.
